ABOUT THE FILM

Set against the rugged backdrop of the Narmada valley in Central India, ‘Sangeeta, Manisha’ offers a sobering glimpse into the lives of two families from a remote tribal village. As their young daughters are admitted to the Nutrition Rehabilitation Centre (NRC) for treatment of severe malnutrition, the documentary unfolds with a quiet intensity.

ABOUT THE DIRECTOR

Shobhit Jain, an award-winning filmmaker, is the founder director of SPS Community Media, an initiative of interactive filmmaking, based in a remote tribal village in central India. The organization was set up to articulate the concerns of the people on the margin through films and other media, pushing agendas for change. An alumnus of Film and Television Institute of India (FTII), Pune, he also directs documentary films apart from mentoring the young filmmakers and producing films; his films have been screened across the world at various film festivals.

DIRECTOR’S STATEMENT

Working in an organization called Samaj Pragati Sahayog that deals with concerns of tribal people intrigued me to bring a story about poverty and sustainability of marginalized people through a lens of ethnographic observation. The film illuminates the daily struggles of these marginalized families, isolated in the depths of the forest. It paints a stark picture of their reality, marked by poverty, deprivation, and the constant battle for survival.

At the forefront of this struggle are the dedicated Health and Nutrition members of a grassroots organization, confronting the daunting task of addressing the health and well-being of these vulnerable families
