ABOUT THE FILM
Olakh follows Umesh, a teenager whose life is unsettled when he is questioned about his caste identity. As he grapples with this crisis, the film sensitively asks where everyday practices become violence and traces how Umesh comes to terms with his crisis when he gains hope by connecting to his roots.
ABOUT THE DIRECTOR
Suhashya Telang is a filmmaker based in Nagpur, Maharashtra, with a background in engineering and construction. Originally from a Marathi-speaking household, Suhashya is fluent in Hindi and English. Transitioning from the technical world to the creative realm, Suhashya explores identity and social themes through cinema. His short film Olakh has received critical attention and was officially selected at the Kerala Short Film Festival, Nagpur Film Festival, and the International Film Festival of Shimla, marking a promising beginning in the independent film circuit. He is also interested in musicality of sound. His experimental music piece was also selected in 7th Alpavirama International Youth Film Festival.
DIRECTOR’S STATEMENT
Caste discrimination is a common practice and greatly normalized in India. I always questioned where do we draw the line for it to call it an offence. Olakh tries to sensitize the audience regarding queries around caste identity.
