We lost Navroze Contractor to a tragic road accident in June 2023. One of India\u2019s leading cinematographers with many works in his filmography that stood the test of time, Navroze shot with Indian and international filmmakers for over five decades.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Between 1980-83, Navroze shot four films\u2014 \u2018Molkarin\u2019, \u2018Tambakoo Chakila Oob Aali\u2019, \u2018Idhi Katha Matramena\u2019 and \u2018Sudesha\u2019\u2014with India\u2019s first feminist film collective Yugantar who collaborated with women workers\u2019 unions and the women\u2019s movement to co-create these films.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

His body of over 50 documentaries include several international productions such as \u2018Ballad of Pabu\u2019 by George Luneau, \u2018Dreams of the Dragon\u2019s Children\u2019 by Pierre Hoffmann, \u2018Are You Listening?\u2019 by Martha Stewart, and \u2018Last House in Bombay\u2019 by Luke Jennings. His most notable Indian documentaries are \u2018What has Happened to this City?\u2019, \u2018Something like a War\u2019, \u2018The Legacy of Malthus\u2019, \u2018The Advocate\u2019, \u2018Invoking Justice\u2019 and \u2018We Have Not Come Here to Die\u2019 by Deepa Dhanraj.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As cinematographer, his eleven feature films include Mani Kaul\u2019s \u2018Duvidha\u2019, Sanjiv Shah\u2019s \u2018Hun Hunshi Hunshilal\u2019, Pattabhirama Reddy\u2019s \u2018Devara Kadu\u2019 and Chetan Shah\u2019s \u2018Framed\u2019 among others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Navroze\u2019s photographs of jazz musicians are in the collection of the Smithsonian Museum, Washington DC, USA. His work on traditional Kushti has been shown in Amsterdam, Chennai, Bangalore and Ahmedabad. He took photography and film workshops at all major film schools in India and several universities abroad, as well as with primary school children around India.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

His love for motorcycles took him riding in Asia, Australia, South Africa, Europe, Thailand, Vietnam, Canada and USA. He initiated a team of three riders, including him, who circumnavigated India on motorcycles in 2005, covering over 18,500 km in 57 days.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

At People\u2019s Film Collective, documentaries shot by Navroze have been a regular feature at the KPFF, and in our Monthly Screenings and Travelling Cinema programmes. In 2021, in the midst of a raging pandemic, Navroze taught cinematography in an online filmmaking workshop organised by the Collective.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
